John Conway presents Loomis: the man, the sanitarium, and the search for a cure In-Person
Loomis: The Man, The Sanitarium, and The Search for the Cure
The once rugged and desolate countryside of Sullivan County, only a few years before transformed by the appearance of hundreds of hotels patronized by New Yorkers looking for a respite from the oppressive heat of the city, would be visited by a very different kind of tourist when the Loomis Memorial Sanitarium for Consumptives outside Liberty admitted its first patients in 1896. This would not only transform the area, but eventually impact the entire medical profession, particularly the way that tuberculosis was treated in this country. Sullivan County Historian John Conway shows and tells this fascinating story as only he can.
