Movie Matinee: One Life In-Person
“One Life” is the story of Nicholas Winton, a British man who rescued 669 Jewish children from Czechoslovakia in 1938, just before World War II. It’s a superb film that provides a showcase for yet another extraordinary Anthony Hopkins performance.
Even apart from Hopkins, “One Life” is a superior film, full of tension and detail, depicting the short window in which rescues were difficult but still possible. This was a time when things like visas were matters of life and death. The movie makes us feel it, so that a seemingly bureaucrat interchange, as when Nicky’s imperious mother (Helena Bonham Carter at her most forceful) appeals to the government for help, has a powerful impact.
“One Life” tells a story that needed to be told and tells it impeccably.
